About Pat Oldham
I grew up in an outdoor loving family in Colorado. My parents knew from early on that I had artistic talent and that I loved animals. Hence, the realistic painting of a skunk in kindergarten, which displeased my teacher who thought it a awful subject for a child to be interested in. My art talent and love of animals have continued to intertwine throughout my life.
In second grade, on the advice of my teacher, my parents entered me in art lessons in the local art center childrens’ program where my favorite subjects invariably were animals. I continued taking lessons both privately and in school through high school. In 1966, I completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Jewelry and Silversmithing at the University of Kansas. I continued drawing and painting. In 1981, while living in New Mexico, I trained as a wildlife rehabilitator, finally finding a way to work directly with animals without having to get a veterinary degree AND having access to “up close and personal” subjects to draw. During the twenty-seven years before I retired in 2008, I cared for over 1300 injured birds, specializing in raptors in the later years. In addition, over a twelve year period, I did educational programs with the nine unreleasable raptors I held on state and federal permits. Experiencing those birds up close afforded me the opportunity to observe their physical design and behavior. That knowledge has translated itself into art works in several media.
I have worked as a wildlife illustrator for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources as well as other institutions and organizations. In addition to many pencil and pen and ink drawings of wildlife used in publications, I published several wildlife coloring books and environmental posters. My favorite medium for two-dimensional work is pastel. I love color. A favorite teacher once told me to look carefully at shadows. They were seldom black but were made up of color. That has caused me to explore color to describe form and, as a result, I seldom us black in my work. Instead I use rich color. My works most frequently are of animals, of course, with my favorite subject being horses, but I enjoy nature in all its forms and sizes and my subjects reflect the delight I find in the creativity of their Designer. However, having worked directly with animals and particularly raptors I do not romantisize them in my art. Athough I am continually struck by the unique beauty of each animal I am always aware of their humorous and even absurd qualities. No animal is seen as too romantic to amuse.
